What Kind of Fool Abandons His Online Project?
A staggering 95 percent of blogs are abandoned, a recent report claims. Why can’t people finish what they’ve started?
Blogs are a dime a dozen these days, but most seem to have the staying power of a typical teen in his first late-night petting session.
Only 7.4 million of the 133 million blogs tracked by content ranking service Technorati are considered active, according to data cited in a recent New York Times story. The rest — a number that amounts to 95 percent of the overall total — haven’t been touched in at least four months.
So why are so many online content sources drying up before they ever peak? Starting a blog or Web site, The Times points out, is the easy part; maintaining it is what takes the long-term commitment. Plenty of writers think they’ll have time to keep up with their creations — then, a month later, find themselves too busy with other things to continue.
Some point to incompetent writers as being the problem. I’d tend to agree — I mean, who starts a project, be it a Web site or even a single story, if he doesn’t have the time or drive to finish it? It’s a reflection of poor character. A partially completed product, particularly one left online for everyone to see, makes you look like a careless amateur.
You don’t have to take my word for it, though. Just ask
