10 New Windows Mobile Apps We’d Like to See
The Windows Mobile Marketplace is open for business, but the shelves aren’t well stocked. We aim to fix that. Here are 10 apps we’d like to buy at the WinMoSto.
Windows Mobile 6.5 is finally out and the Windows Mobile Store is now officially open for business. Praise be to all that is holy in Redmond.
And while reviewers of WinMo 6.5 phones haven’t exactly been doing backflips with excitement — more like gagging, really – it’s nice to finally have an alternative to those 80 gazillion iPhone apps.
But what exactly is available? Not much, as far as we can tell. Naturally, we have a few suggestions for the apps we’d like to see grace the WinMo shelves, starting with these ten:
Start Me Up: See how many times you can click a virtual “Start” button within a 30-second time span. If you make it to 100 clicks, your phone locks up — and you win! (Note: Numerous reboots may be required.)
Ballmer Chair Toss. Using the accelerometer in your phone, you must attempt to pick up and hurl a variety of posh office furnishings out the window of your high-rise executive suite. Just remember to hold onto the phone – those WinMo handsets are so bulky you could kill someone.
WinClock. Stopwatch-style app measures the amount of time, in milliseconds, between upgrading to the next version of Windows and deeply regretting that decision. Can also measure time needed, in days, to upgrade to Windows 7.
iEnvy. Replaces painfully clumsy Windows Mobile interface with a slick new one that looks just the iPhone’s. Available for $299, iEnvy offers mediocre functionality, but it will put that fancy Apple symbol right on your home screen. Until Apple sues the bejesus out of them, anyway.
BSOD4me. Simple app displays a Blue Screen of Death just by pressing any key. Perfect for Microsoft fanboys nostalgic for the glory days of Windows 95.
Microsoft Power Gamer Pack 1.0 For Windows Mobile Home Users, Ultimate Edition: Play such cutting-edge classics as Minesweeper, Hearts, and Solitaire in this memorably named WinMo application. Also available in Microsoft Power Game Pack 1.0 For Windows Mobile Professional Users, Extra Crispy Edition.
BALLmer BUSTER: Watch the bouncing Ballmer bop all over your screen, then bust him with your mallet before he flopsweats your phone into short-circuited oblivion. Take down the clown before the timer elapses and you won’t have to hear him sing Developers! Developers! Developers!
LaunchPartay. Creates a virtual Windows 7 launch party inside your phone, complete with party hats, confetti, and a pinata shaped like Bill Gates’ head. When it finally explodes money comes out, which you can exchange for points in the WinMo store.
Vista Emulator: Relive the Vista experience on your Windows Mobile phone. From arbitrarily rearranged and hard-to-find commands to incessant hassling regular courtesy checks by Windows Genuine Advantage, you’ll feel the “wow” all over again.
Recycle Bin: Find the nearest electronics recycling center that accepts Windows Mobile cell phones, even if they’re still actively in use.
