Open Source Geeks Take to DC Streets
“Million Geek March” draws dozens of angry dweebs. We couldn’t understand a word they said, but they sure were pissed.
Chanting “We’re nerds and demand to be heard,” a million hundreds of thousands approximately 17 geeks marched on Washington DC today, demanding the Obama Administration renounce proprietary software and embrace Open Source.
As reported in today’s New York Times,
Some of the world’s largest technology companies have banded together in a bid to push open-source software on the United States government. They’ve formed a group called Open Source for America, which seeks to make sure that government agencies at least consider open-source software as an option in their buying decisions….Some of the initial members of the organization include Google, Oracle, Red Hat, Advanced Micro Devices, Novell, Canonical… and a Who’s Who of open-source advocates….
However, the first annual 10 to the 6th Power Man March attracted a somewhat smaller crowd than its organizers had hoped, possibly because it was scheduled as the same time as Comic-Con in San Diego, otherwise known as the Geek High Holy Days.
"We blew it," admitted Todd LaBonta, 10/6th protest organizer. "I had put Comic Con on my Sunbird calendar and then, like, totally forgot to restore when I had to reinitialize my Gutsy Gibbon distro. My bad."
Still, the small but spirited crowd erupted in cheers when LaBonta gave a stirring speech urging them to reboot society by ‘/Dev Nulling’ the government. They then marched to the nearest Big Planet Comics store for a Magic: The Gathering marathon, singing "We Shall Overcode."
