Chart: Why People Use Windows Mobile

We polled Windows Mobile users to find out why they still use the Number Five smartphone platform when there are at least four better choices available. Here’s what they told us.

The story you're about to read is not (entirely) true. It is, however, more accurate than most things on network television.

It’s no secret that, if Windows Mobile were any more of a dog, it would need to wear a flea collar. Now it appears even Steve Ballmer is getting the message.

At the recent All Things D confab, the Microsoft CEO publicly admitted that Windows Mobile is number five in the smartphone market, prompting observers to ask, “Wait, there are five smartphone platforms? Really?”

But Ballmer’s statement also raises the question, when you can choose between the iPhone, Android, and Blackberry, why does anyone even bother to use WinMo?

We decided to find out. eSarcasm conducted a deeply scientific poll of every WinMo user we could find to figure out what exactly it is that holds them to this platform. The results are extremely telling.

There. Mystery solved. Glad we could clear that up.

    Funny, but not so true.

    I love my HTC Touch Pro 2 running WinMo 6.5.

    Remember all those headlines about how you can finally use Skype over 3G with Verizon?

    Been doing it on my AT&T WinMo for a couple of years. (Had a Tilt prior to the TP2).

    Oh, and all that tethering being bragged about for FUTURE releases of Android and iPhone OS?

    It's native to Windows Mobile, and has been for a while.

    Now, would I bother touching a WinMo phone NOT made by HTC? I doubt it. But HTC makes some sweet, sweet Windows Mobile devices, that do exactly what I want, and are more extensible and have thousands of available apps.
