California Tortilla Dishes Up Advice on Successfully Using Social Media

Would you take advice on how to use Twitter and Facebook from a burrito wrapper? Hey, it probably knows as much about the topic as anyone else.

That’s the actual headline of a press release we received this week. It seems anybody can call himself a social media guru these days, even a piece of Mexican baked goods.

Per the release:

Social media, which is essentially the act of spreading information by means of social interaction, include the use of such popular sites as Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, and even blogs and wikis. Restaurants are successfully reaching and staying in touch with their customer base, particularly by using Facebook and Twitter.

For example, California Tortilla uses Facebook to converse with their customer base. They have learned a lot about them and have even allowed one of their fans to name a new menu item, “The No-Meato Burrito,” which is a vegan burrito. They are also using an application on the site that allows site users to send virtual food to their Facebook friends, thereby continuing to spread their company name and product around via word of mouth.

For a piece of lard-enriched flatbread, Cal T. really seems to know his stuff. We’re always looking for tips on how to conquer manipulate succeed in social media, so we sat down with Mr. Tortilla for a brief chat.

e: Anybody ever tell you that you look just like Jesus?

I get that a lot.

e: We were endorsed by Him, you know.

Cool. I once got peed on by the Taco Bell Chihuahua. Small world, eh?

e: So how does one succeed in Twitter, Facebook, etc?

It helps if you’re Guy Kawasaki, or at least, one of the 1,347 people pretending to be Guy Kawasaki. Or Robert Scoble. Somebody other people listen to, even if you have nothing original to say and they have no idea why they’re following you.

Barring that, a nice set of knockers goes a long way.

e: You really don’t know much about social media do you?

We’re just making it up as we go along. Have I told you about our new No-Meato Burrito? One of our customers came up with that name on Facebook. Pretty coolio, no?

e: Uhh… yeah. We heard about that one. Do you let customers cook your food too?

Not yet. But we’re kind of hoping they’d clean the toilets. Our last janitor just quit, and we haven’t been able to find a good replacement.

e: Better job offer?

Yep. He also decided to become a social media guru. Apparently everybody’s doing it. Gotta tell you, it beats the hell out of being wrapped around a stinking pile of beans and cheese.
